Dubai Swats Pests Ogling Beach Beauties

Dubai Swats Pests Ogling Beach Beauties – New York Times
As winter arrives in this Persian Gulf city, the masses are thronging by the tens of thousands to its white sandy beaches, wearing, in an unlikely exercise in maritime coexistence, everything from black flowing abayas to slinky bikinis.

Thronging right alongside them are Dubai’s “beach pests,” the gangs of men who trudge through the sand, fully dressed, to ogle the women.

Mostly laborers at the front lines of Dubai’s building boom — toiling on manmade islands, innumerable high-rises, even a dome in the desert for the world’s largest indoor snow park — they flood the beaches every weekend to leer at women, photograph them and occasionally try to grope them in the water.

Children aghast as pelican swallows pigeon whole

Children aghast as pelican swallows pigeon whole | the Daily Mail
Families strolling through a London park were left shocked when a pelican picked up and swallowed an unsuspecting pigeon.

The Eastern White pelican struggled with the desperately frantic pigeon in its beak for more than 20 minutes before swallowing it whole.

The moment was caught on camera by photographer Cathal McNaughton, who was taking pictures of the wildlife in St James’s Park.

The pigeon was still alive when it reached the pelican’s stomach, he said.

Jalapeño-eating contest one hot time

Star-Telegram.com | 10/08/2006 | Jalapeño-eating contest one hot time
In the most impressive gastrointestinal display this side of Fear Factor, professional eater Rich “The Locust” LeFevre swallowed 247 peppers up to their stems in eight minutes to take the title. The 60-year-old retired Nevada accountant, who drives across the country entering eating contests, won $2,000. His wife accompanies him on his trips.

The pros knew a few tricks the amateurs didn’t. Erik “the Red” Denmark said he took Pepto Bismol beforehand to coat his stomach. All four pros took their own drinks — milk and juice — knowing that the water that was provided didn’t stand a chance against the acids and oils in the peppers.

Huang, meanwhile, went into the contest with a strategy he called “all heart, no talent.” He downed 53 jalapeños, although he was unable to talk about it for several minutes. He could manage only guttural groans.

When he regained the ability to form words, the first thing Huang said was, “I can’t feel my face.”

Pissed-off Jihadists

KnoxNews: Columnists
The jihadists seek to hijack predominately Muslim countries out of globalization, disconnecting them completely from “Westoxification.” President Bush, in response, laid a “big bang” on the Middle East by toppling its worst dictator in the hope that the subsequent tumult would trigger significant change, which it has – both good and bad.

In short, we endeavor to connect Islam to the globalizing world, while al-Qaida promises permanent civilizational apartheid.

Don’t pretend you don’t know which outcome brings lasting peace.

For that reason alone, simply toppling the much-hated Taliban wasn’t enough. Al-Qaida’s leadership is forced to hide in off-grid locations like the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, but its dream of totalitarian empire centers on the Middle East. By toppling Saddam, Bush brought this fight home where it belongs – the Persian Gulf.

If the U.S. had concentrated solely on isolated Afghanistan, both the central front, and the cause celebre would have simply been co-located in a state with no strategic significance to either side, playing into al-Qaida’s hands.

As for generating more jihadists thanks to Iraq, that’s a bit like walking into Franklin Roosevelt’s White House in 1944 and wondering out loud why there seem to be more Japanese and Germans fighting us than ever before, just because we had the temerity to fight back.

Applying police statistics (Why isn’t terrorism down if police activity is up?) to warfare can be deeply misguided. Continue reading “Pissed-off Jihadists”

Brazilian election pre-empted by sex video

Bloomberg.com: Exclusive
The hottest topic on many Brazilian voters’ minds isn’t this weekend’s presidential election. It’s the video of a Merrill Lynch & Co. banker having a sexual encounter on a Spanish beach with an ex-girlfriend of Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo.

The video showing MTV host Daniella Cicarelli, 27, a triathlete and model, with Renato Malzoni Filho, 33, a private banker at Merrill in Sao Paulo, has crashed computers on trading floors in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The topic dominates office and party chat more than the future of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is forecast to win a new term, said Brazilian gossip columnist Ricardo Boechat.

“This has become a sensation, and it’s much more exciting than the election,” Boechat said. “In Brazil, people find it hard to resist anything with a rich, handsome young man and a gorgeous young woman.’

Basketball Catfish

Catfish1

From Panama to the Great Lakes, Bill Driver’s done pretty well fishing over the past 50 years.

Now he’s wondering if he’d have done even better with a different kind of bait. “I never considered using a kid’s basketball,” Driver said. “Maybe I should have.”

Friday afternoon, Driver was standing on the deck of his house near 119th Street West and Central when he saw an eight-inch ball floating in Sandalwood Lake. Noticing the ball wasn’t floating normally, Driver wandered to his dock for a closer look. A catfish had its mouth stuck around the ball.

Catfish 3Driver hollered for his wife, Pam, to get a camera while he unrigged the sail from his nine-foot boat, wading into the lake and corralling the fish toward shore with the sail as a seine.Several times, the flathead tried to dive, only to have the ball buoy it back to the surface.

Catfish 4 The fish appeared to be exhausted and offered little resistance once in the shallows.Things may have gone easier had the fish the strength to struggle.”I just couldn’t pull that ball out of its mouth,” Driver said. “I was lifting up out of the water as best I could by the ball. I finally sent my wife to the house to get a knife.”

Driver carefully deflated the ball. Estimated at 50 pounds, the fish swam toward the deepest part of the lake. Driver has no plans of targeting the fish in the near future.Instead, he’ll probably continue to fish for the bass and panfish that swim within the one-acre lake.

“I guess I might try fishing with a golf ball,” Driver said. “Smaller fish, smaller bait.” Thanks to Mike Douso
