Sometimes both heaven and Earth erupt. In Iceland in 1991, the volcano Hekla erupted at the same time that auroras were visible overhead. Hekla, one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, has erupted at least 20 times over the past millennium, sometimes causing great destruction. The last eruption occurred only twelve years ago but caused only minor damage

Catherine Draycott, head of Wellcome Images and a member of the judging panel, said: ‘The Wellcome Image Awards are unique in that the winners are chosen for their scientific and technical merit as much as for their aesthetic appeal.
‘They offer people a chance to get closer to science and research and see it in a different way, as a source of beauty as well as providing important information about ourselves and the world around us.

Thanks to Bob Bopp, who explains ” This is from NASA’s photo of the day site. It shows the Skogarfoss waterfall in Iceland. The colorful arc of light on the left is due to drops that have drifted off from the waterfall and are now illuminated by the nearly full Moon. High above are the faint green streaks of aurora. In the background is a beautiful starscape that includes the Big Dipper.”
Terrifying Cloud Threatens Neighborhood
The father-of-three said: ‘It was a nice evening and the sun was shining when I suddenly heard claps of thunder, which was strange.
‘My wife went to look out the front door and saw the clouds blowing up from the south.
‘I took one look and headed back into the house to get my camera.
‘We watched the storm for a few minutes when I noticed that the cloud was starting to spin.
‘I got my ladder and climbed up on my roof to get a better view.
‘It never got the momentum to create a tornado, but it did look like it was going to happen before out eyes.
‘We watched for 45 minutes as it slowly moved back into cloud formation.’

Bear Chasing Bison Photos
“I thought I was having a hallucination or something,” said Wypyszinski. “I couldn’t believe what that buffalo looked like.”
It was a bison, badly burned from an encounter with one of the numerous hot spots in Yellowstone National Park.
A grizzly was chasing the buffalo (which was practically cooked already) and gaining quickly.
Wypyszinski stopped his car on the desolate highway and took out his camera. “I stood along the car as long as I thought it was safe.” The two beasts passed the man by without paying any notice.
We pick our tale up where the photos end.
Wypiszinski says once in the safety of the woods the bison out maneuvered the grizzly, escaping to live exactly one more day. Park rangers had to put the bison down due to the injuries it sustained. The result: these 14 hair-raising pictures at the link below thanks to Chris Mergenthaler
