Video: Rescue of 200 Stranded Horses – Netherlands

You may have heard about the herd of horses that were trapped for 3 days on a tiny piece of land in wind and rain in the Netherlands a short while ago? They were trapped on a small piece of land, surrounded by water. Their natural instincts kept them from swimming to solid land, from their tiny perch. There were about 100 horses huddled together against the wind and water.

The Nation was mesmerized watching this drama as 18 of the horses perished, while others were slowly weakening. First the fire department, then the Dutch army, tried to rescue them – both efforts were unsuccessful. Then, with a break in the weather, the water level went down and four women hatched a plan to attempt a rescue by luring the horses into the water. Here’s a video of the successful rescue. Thanks to Mike Douso

The music is a Vangelis piece — I think “New World” from the film about Columbus starring Gerard Depardieu and Sigourney Weaver.

Fantastic This film had grown men crying in their seats.

Everyone in the room had goosebumps.

Great to see good positive news, instead of the usual negative crap.

    Keep it up.

Personally to me, it is a confirmation of the amazing grace of our Heavenly Father who will go to great extremes to rescue us in our helpless and desperate times – His power, love, and revelation be unto us all and to you. Thank you so much. I had lost this but Elijah list resurrected it . Bless you.

  16. The horses were so calm, truly wonderful to watch. How inspiring! Where did the horses go? who were the women?

  17. Wow, what a great idea to lure them off the island. Still it took some brave horses to leave the island and start the rescue. I’m saving this video. Thanks

  18. Send a woman to do a man’s job, then it will get done! Sorry, had to say it. It is a wonderful video, and puts a lump in my throat. I am thankful so many of the horses were saved.

  19. It reminded me of the bible.
It looked impossible but, with GOD all things are possible.
Sorta like parting the red sea!! He parted the water so the horses could see a way out. Praise is holy Name!

  21. Yesterday a friend forwarded me a video from the Netherlands about a herd of horses in 2006 who had gotten stranded in a sudden downpour and were trapped on a piece of land which seemed to be an island, because it was the only high ground left after the engulfing rain. There were over 100 of them. There was no route for them to take to get back to the mainlands…so there they stood huddled in a tiny mass on safe ground, their back ends to the outside to keep them sheltered from the cold icy winds, with hardly any room to move. Ever felt that way? They were many an onlooker who were trying to figure out how to save the horses. For this has gone on for three days. Since there was no food….rescue team arranged for hay to be taken to them…

The analogies in this story of how Christ works in our lives are so parallel. When we are stuck …and there seems to be no way out…God comes to us…He feeds us through the loving care of others …food for the body and food for the soul.

Slowly the water receded…and though the path back to the mainlands was still deep…it now was able to cross. But the horses remained…stuck….they needed more than just a freedom route…they needed someone to show them how to get on it and move through it.

    Psalm 143:10
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

As it is with us…Freedom is available, but, so often, we have been there so long we don’t know how to let go of our situation and move on ….In order to break free of the traps that we have gotten ourselves into we need someone to show us how. So here came the ladies on horseback from the mainlands…dancing through the waters to the trapped horses. The horses began to stir…for they recognized like kind…and as the horseback riders came closer…there was a visible change in activity among the herd. The riders approached the island, embarked on the island, mingled on the island and then slowly made their exit from the island. What happened? The horses followed and were brought to freedom. They were rescued…but only because they were willing to follow a lead that would bring them out of their captivity.

That is what God does for each of us…He comes to us where we are….He identifies our needs and comforts us with his provisions…When God approaches us, he comes slowly and gently to our aid. Then when we allow his presence to indwell our hearts …he leads us. But it is only when we chose to follow that he is able to rescue us..and bring us to the safety of His Holy ground..It is through God’s lead that he rescues us from the traps that we have allowed outside forces to hold us captive with.

In this world we so often are the followers…we do what others are doing, want what others have etc. But if we are followers of Christ and not of others…then that is where we will find high ground. I think of those folks at the light who were turning….I might not be trapped on an island due to a torrent downpour…but I do find myself trapped by my longings and by my judgments of others, by my self centered ways, etc. and I do need someone to come and show me the way out. Someone to show me a clear path to high ground….and someone who I know can relate to me and will lead me from entrapment to freedom. Christ is the one….but am I willing to follow? We all need to be rescued…from one thing or another. Christ knows our needs…and he is available to come to where we are trapped and free us. I want to be free…but there is a lurking risk in going out to unknown waters…If I see that someone has gone before me and is showing me the way…then following that someone makes turns that risk into a trust! Christ has gone before me..he knows no risks…he only knows freedom through the love of God his father…and our Father. I want to swim with that herd of believers…and I am willing to follow Christ’s lead to Holy Ground…It might be a tough swim…but if I keep my eyes on His mainland…I know that freedom will be a worthy goal.

Dear Lord, we are all stranded without you. We may appear to be on solid ground but we in fact are on an island that is surrounded by boundaries that without a true freedom. Thank you for being willing to be the leader for all of us, and for forging into the traps that beset us and rescuing us to your freedom. Help us to be followers of your way and in turn be leaders to others. Give us the courage to go into unknown waters that you show to us and help rescue others who may be in danger and entrapped….and may we show them the unconditional love that we have been shown through your loving kindness and care. Amen

  22. Trully magical….These women are true warriors full of light and love….they succeeded because they knew they could….A Ho!!!!

    Behold the human spirit….

  23. 30. Claudia Welker, April 17th, 2008 What a beautiful example of God’s creation being cared for by the women who are full of love and showed this by the rescue. May there be more people like these women as well as the people taking food to these horses. May God Bless these people. It gives me encouragement just to know there are people out there that still care.

  24. What a story but one with a happy ending! Where did all of the horses end up going?

  25. Fantastic … I must have watched this well over 100 time since I first saw it in March 2007
