Live Panorama of Pu`u `O`o Vent, Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i
Check-out the current eruption. This panorama is a composite of three images from a research camera positioned on the north rim of Pu`u `O`o’s crater. The images update every 5 minutes. At times, clouds and volcanic fume obscure visibility. The camera is subject to sporadic breakdown, and its remote location makes immediate repair impossible. Cameras can be where people should not. Pu`u `O`o is off-limits to the general public because of multiple and significant volcanic hazards.

As part of his deal to join the WTO (World Trade Organization), Putin agreed to shutdown the Russian allofMp3.com music site. It attempted to re-open under the Russian allofmp3.ru domain, but was shutdown again. Now it is up again as Mp3sparks.com. We have blogged this copyright struggle earlier here.

UPDATE -  Mp3sparks.com has also been shutdown now, but according to the allTunes.com website, AllofMP3.com’s six million existing accounts can still be accessed if users download the allTunes software client. Once downloaded, users can browse through its catalogue and download from the 778,861 available tracks. More here

The Gettysburg Powerpoint Presentation
And now please welcome President Abraham Lincoln.

Good morning. Just a second while I get this connection to work. Do I press this button here? Function-F7? No, that’s not right. Hmmm. Maybe I’ll have to reboot. Hold on a minute. Um, my name is Abe Lincoln and I’m your president. While we’re waiting, I want to thank Judge David Wills, chairman of the committee supervising the dedication of the Gettysburg cemetery. It’s great to be here, Dave, and you and the committee are doing a great job. Gee, sometimes this new technology does have glitches, but we couldn’t live without it, could we? Oh – is it ready? OK, here we go Click here to start

At our 40th High School reunion, Rusty Tunnard used this an a devastating example of the technological destruction of public speaking, and especially the art of story-telling.

Conan brings Horny Manatees to the internet – TV Squad
On Monday night, Conan ran a comedy bit on NCAA mascots. Among the mascots was “FSU’s webcam manatee.” The gag of a gyrating manatee in front of a computer ended with one of the band members checking out the hot manatee on his laptop. Conan cracked that he must be frequenting “hornymanatee.com.

The next night, Conan appeared explaining that, unbeknownst to him, NBC policy requires that any non-existent web address that is mentioned on the air be bought by NBC for ten years. We’ll never really know if this fact was actually “unbeknownst” to the Cone Zone, but it does mean that NBC now has among its stable of web property - HornyManatee.com - which has now become a Conan-related site for fan pics of hot and lusty sea cows in action. There’s a solo manatee, manatee on manatee, man on manatee and fetish pages. One of those should satisfy your interspecies cravings.

Get a Human on the Phone! October 7, 2006

gethuman list of Company phone numbers & how to get a human
If your Compnay isn’t in this database then, once you have a phone number, here are some tips to try to get through the computer to get to a live human:

  1. Interrupt. Press 0 (or 0# or #0 or 0* or *0) repeatedly, sometimes quickly. Unfortunately the same keystroke does not always work for each company. Many IVRs will connect to a human after a few “invalid entries”, although some IVRs will hangup. :-(
  2. Talk. Say “get human” (or “agent” or “representative”) or raise your voice, or just mumble. :) The IVR might connect you to a human after one of these key or unknown phrases.
  3. Just hold, pretending you have only an old rotary phone.
  4. Connect to account collections or sales or account cancellation; they always seem to answer quickly. First ask them for their name and rep number (so they know you are writing it down, and thus so they are more likely to help you.) Then ask them to transfer you to the department you need. Sometimes they will put you ahead of the queue, although sometimes they will send you to the end (and thus in those cases this tip is useless).
  5. Toll call. For credit cards, if the expected wait time is too long, hangup and try to call back on their non-toll-free number, as they often have shorter queues.
  6. Selecting the option for Spanish will sometimes get you a bilingual human more quickly than if you just waited for an English-only operator.

When you do finally find a human, ask them how to connect directly the next time (in case your call gets disconnnected etc),
